Your generosity has been instrumental in funding a bi-weekly activity group for individuals facing mental health challenges over the past year and the impact has been tremendous.
This group, hosted at ACCESS Fort Garry, offers a diverse range of activities to appeal to participants of all ages, interests, and abilities. From creative crafts and friendly games to group outings, each event fosters an invaluable sense of community. BINGO is always popular, and a visit to The Leaf at Assiniboine Park was a highlight for many. Participant Roland says it reminded him of his home in Nigeria! “I couldn’t believe it!” he says excitedly.
However, these gatherings are about more than just activities; they provide a profound sense of belonging and an opportunity to both give and receive support and understanding from peers. This kind of connection, which is not always available from friends or family unfamiliar with mental health challenges, can be priceless.

Zirka, a dedicated group participant, struggles to articulate the impact the group has had on her life. “I rarely leave my home,” she shares. “It’s often just me and my four walls. But knowing that I have friends here who will worry if I don’t show up – it gets me out of the house.” The importance of this accountability cannot be understated. “I wish it was every week,” she says with a small smile as she wipes away a tear. “I’m sorry I’m so emotional.”
Zirka was one of the first participants when the group started and she has begun to take on a bit of a leadership role. Gloria, a newer group member, reflects on Zirka’s welcoming presence. “I wasn’t too sure what to expect,” she says, “but so many things that Zirka has shared have resonated with me. I am very grateful.” The women share a glance and marvel at their rather unexpected friendship.
Overall, this group provides a supportive environment where those who attend learn, grow, and connect with others who understand their experience in a way other people in their lives may not. It helps to reduce stigma and reinforces the idea that they are not alone in their journey towards mental wellness. This can be incredibly empowering and comforting, and we have you to thank!
