Recently, staff on the psychiatric units at Victoria Hospital identified a safety issue: visitors were sometimes bringing unsafe items in when visiting loved ones. Although most often unintentional, purses, bags or unattended jackets sometimes contained items that could potentially harm patients or disrupt the therapeutic environment. Sharp objects, lighters, or other contraband substances were sometimes inadvertently left behind, putting staff and all patients at risk
The safety of both staff and patients at Victoria Hospital is of utmost importance to everyone here at the hospital, so when the team at Victoria Hospital Foundation learned about this risk, they provided a grant to purchase and install lockers located outside each psychiatric unit where visitors can securely store their personal belongings.
“This is not only increasing safety, but is also providing an important touchpoint between staff and family members. This helps to build relationships and improve communication.” says Kurt Pay, Director of Health Services, Mental Health, Therapeutic Services, Spiritual Health & Patient Transport.
With more than 1,200 people receiving in-patient support at Victoria Hospital last year alone, these conversations and connections are very important, especially considering the average length of stay is 16 days.
Investing in equipment that improves safety makes it easier to support the healing, recovery, and wellness of those living with mental health concerns in our community. Thank you for making this possible with your generosity!
