Individuals in need of ongoing mental health care may find it daunting to enter a clinical setting, especially after a period of being admitted. Others may arrive with their thoughts racing after being stuck in traffic or following a long bus ride.

A calm and supportive environment can make a big difference by putting patients at ease and in the right mindset for their appointment.

Last year alone, Victoria Hospital's Outpatient Mental Health Services program had over 8,000 in-person visits for psychiatry services as well as 3,000 visits for medication monitoring/administration.

A new waiting room will help to build trust and make a positive first impression for these patients and their families. Patients will have the opportunity to relax and unwind alone or with loved ones before and after their appointments in this supportive space.

  • Comfortable and accessible seating for up to eight individuals
  • Includes one sofa for shared seating for those who bring a support person
  • Incorporates charging stations for electronic devices such as mobile phones
  • New side tables to ensure the space is functional
  • A filtered water station
  • Enhanced lighting and a refresh of the wall paint and window coverings

These enhancements will not only make the space more welcoming but also make it easier to clean thoroughly, which further supports the health of patients.

Just coming into a facility can be very difficult for somebody to do because of past trauma. Having an environment that is not as clinical and a little more comfortable can set people off on the right foot." - Kurt Pay, Director of Health Services, Mental Health

"It will feel more welcoming, my medication makes my mouth dry so having water available will be good."

"A nice space will match nice staff."

"It will be nice to have a new welcoming space, it might also help make my mood better when I have to wait."
